The best Compliance candidates aren't always looking for a job! Something I've been reminded of this week. Some of the strongest Compliance and Risk professionals I speak to are perfectly happy where they are. They're not applying for jobs, they're not actively looking and they're certainly not spending their evenings scrolling through job adverts! But that doesn't mean they wouldn't consider the right opportunity. Sometimes it takes a conversation about a role they hadn't considered, a different working environment or an opportunity to develop their career. You can't always find the right person by advertising a vacancy and waiting for applications. Building strong relationships are imperative! #FlairNewsHub

It's always lovely to hear when someone is excited about their next career move, but receiving feedback like this makes it even more rewarding. We recently helped a candidate secure a new role with one of our law firm clients, and they very kindly shared these words with us: "Once again, thank you to the whole team at Flair, you have been outstanding in every aspect and genuinely couldn’t have done it without you - very grateful šŸ™šŸ»" There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes in recruitment, and not every process is straightforward. But knowing that we've made a real difference to someone's experience, and helped them take that next step in their career, is what makes it all worthwhile. A lovely message for the team to receive! #FlairNewsHub

A slow hiring process is costing you great candidates. If your hiring process takes six weeks, don't be surprised when your best candidates accept offers elsewhere. You might be losing them because another company made a decision first. Strong candidates have options. What can make them lose interest? • Long gaps between interviews • Unclear feedback • Too many decision-makers • No communication after the final stage Small delays can create big doubts. A great candidate experience isn't just about being friendly. It's about being organised, decisive and respectful of people's time. Because finding the right person is only half the job. The other half is giving them a reason to choose you. Hiring managers and recruiters: what's the biggest thing slowing down your hiring process? #FlairForRecruitment #LegalServices #FinancialServices #FlairNewsHub

The Results Are In šŸ‘‡ I recently asked people about their biggest career goal over the next 12 months, and the results were interesting: šŸ”¹ 40% want to learn new skills šŸ”¹ 33% are looking to secure a promotion šŸ”¹ 13% want to earn a higher salary šŸ”¹ 13% are considering moving to a different company The biggest takeaway? Career development is a major priority. It’s a great reminder that career progression means different things to different people. Whether it’s developing new skills, taking the next step up the career ladder or exploring a fresh opportunity, career ambitions look different for everyone. From a recruitment perspective, understanding these motivations is essential. The right move isn't always about a bigger salary, it could be about progression, new challenges, better opportunities or finding a role that aligns with long-term goals. For employers, creating clear development pathways can help attract and retain great people. For candidates, knowing what you want from your next step is a great place to start. Your next career move should take you closer to where you want to be. #FlairNewsHub #RealisingAmbitions #CareerProgression

Getting the salary wrong can be costly! Particularly when recruiting within Compliance and Risk. I spoke to a Head of Compliance a few days ago - this exact scenario happened. You have a vacancy, you know the experience and technical expertise you're looking for, and you have a salary budget. But what happens when that budget doesnt quite reflect the market? You start speaking to candidates, but some of the strongest people aren't engaging because the salary isn't competitive. Weeks pass, the search becomes increasingly difficult and eventually the budget is revisited. By this point Good candidates may have moved on. Valuable time has been lost. The recruitment process has taken far longer than anticipated. You still might not have found the right person. What about the candidate experience? Changing salaries and expectations partway through a process can create uncertainty and frustration. I completely appreciate that budgets are important. But getting the salary right at the outset, or allowing a little flexibility, can save weeks of recruitment time and create a much better candidate journey. This is where understanding the Compliance and Risk market before launching a search can make such a difference. If you'd like to discuss salary benchmarking or market insights within Compliance and Risk, do get in touch! #FlairNewsHub

There's a lot more to a successful bid than a well-written proposal! I've been having some really interesting conversations with experienced Bids Managers recently. And it's apparent that a lot goes on behind the scenes. From challenging senior stakeholders and developing win strategies to coaching pitch teams and bringing different departments together. Also, just how important culture and collaboration are to these professionals! Being able to challenge ideas, ask questions openly and work with people who genuinely value each others expertise. One particularly experienced candidate told me that the right team and environment were just as important as salary. Because ultimately, behind every successful bid is a team of people working together. For those working in Bids and BD, what do you think makes a really successful team? #FlairNewsHub

Last week, we placed ā€˜the unicorn’ our Wealth Management client had been searching for…! ⭐ The role came with a wish list, and in our client’s own words, they repeatedly said, ā€œWe know we’re looking for a unicorn!ā€ And whilst we managed to tick those boxes, the successful candidate looked slightly different to what the client had originally outlined. The process highlighted the importance of having open and honest conversations with our Hiring Managers. Asking more questions, challenging the brief, understanding what really matters and sometimes encouraging clients to look beyond their original expectations. Every placement is a happy one, but some come with that little bit of extra excitement like this one did! #FlairNewsHub #Recruitment

I've spent some time this week organising our next Compliance and Risk networking breakfast in London. It's reminded me why I love bringing people in this profession together. Compliance can sometimes be quite a lonely role (even when you have a full team) You're often the person challenging decisions, asking difficult questions and navigating situations where there isn't always a straightforward answer. That's why I think getting together with other Compliance and Risk professionals is so important. It's an opportunity to share experiences, discuss challenges and realise that others are often dealing with exactly the same situations. And sometimes the most valuable conversations happen away from your desk. It's not just about networking. Its about building relationships with people who genuinely understand your role. I'm really looking forward to our next London networking breakfast on the 5th of November. #FlairNewsHub

I had an interesting conversation with a senior leader this week about what makes a great Head of Compliance. They want someone who gets amongst the action, not someone who manages compliance from a distance. Someone who builds relationships, understands the business and is approachable enough that colleagues feel comfortable picking up the phone before something becomes a problem. We also talked about the shift towards spending more time back in the office, rather than working predominantly from home. Not because people cant work effectively remotely, but because so much of good compliance is built on relationships, trust and those everyday conversations. You cant always build that influence through scheduled Teams meetings. Is being visible and accessible just as important as technical expertise for senior Compliance professionals? #FlairNewsHub

Can somebody please remind me why I bother? The coffees. The catch-ups. The long conversations. Building relationships when there's no immediate opportunity. Well, this week has been a pretty good reminder. ✨ It's the candidate we placed six years ago (now a hiring manager) who came to us for help recruiting into her team. All because she remembers the service she received. ā˜• It's the coffee with a client who has no vacancies right now. But they value our catch-ups, market knowledge and the relationship we've built. šŸ‘ It's seeing candidates we've placed progress in their careers. Spotting their promotions on LinkedIn and feeling a genuine sense of pride. šŸ¤ It's the clients who pick up the phone when they're stretched. They have a tricky vacancy and know they can rely on us. And that, for me, is why we bother. A lovely reminder of why building genuine relationships matters, whatever the industry. And its only Wednesday! 😊 #FlairNewsHub #Relationships #RealisingAmbitions

A busy start to the week, with a day out of the office yesterday! Kicking off with a client meeting and preparations for an upcoming breakfast event, followed by an offsite team meeting to focus on our plans for the quarter ahead - all interspersed with some lovely reminders of why we do what we do! Whilst visiting our client, I spotted a candidate we'd placed three years ago, looking really happy and clearly thriving in their role. Then, on the train home, I opened an email from another candidate updating us on her first day in her new role. She shared that it had ā€œinstantly felt like the right roleā€ and described working with Flair as an ā€œabsolute joy.ā€ It was brilliant working alongside Ryan Eardley on this placement and even better to hear such lovely feedback! Great way to start the week! #FlairNewsHub

There's nothing better than seeing someone progress in their career. Having supported this candidate through two career moves, it's great to see how far they've come. They're working towards becoming an Investment Manager and have recently passed probation in their new role. Building relationships where people trust you to support them at different stages of their career is one of the things I value most about recruitment. They sent me this message recently: "Just thought I'd let you know I've passed my 6 month probation. Once again thanks so much for your guidance and support, really enjoying the role and got on with the team straight away. I wouldn't be in this position without you and the others at Flair who have helped me along the way. Can't thank you enough!" This is one of the best parts of what I do. Helping people navigate their careers, identify the right opportunities and take the next step towards their goals. For me, recruitment isn't just about finding someone their next role. It's about understanding where they want to go and helping them get there. If you're thinking about your next career move and would value a conversation about your options, or you're a hiring manager looking to connect with top-tier wealth management talent, I'd love to hear from you. #FlairForRecruitment #WealthManagement #Operations #Recruitment #FlairNewsHub

A busy week in recruitment, marketing and everything in between… 🌟 It’s been one of those weeks where no two days have looked the same, here is a little look at what I’ve been working on this week: Recruitment: Working across a range of roles and supporting the recruitment process to help connect the right people with the right opportunities. Learning and Development: Taking part in a Social Scaling course with James Osborne at TRN and continuing to build my knowledge of social media, content and how to grow engagement. Marketing: Creating and sending newsletters to keep our audience informed, engaged and connected. Internal Recruitment: Supporting internal recruitment and helping us find the right people for our team. Networking and Events: Helping to organise Sarah Crawford's upcoming Risk and Compliance networking event, bringing senior professionals together and creating opportunities for meaningful connections. What has been the highlight of your week? #FlairNewsHub

As the market becomes more competitive, hiring managers are needing to move faster to secure the best talent. Especially in the Compliance, Risk and Financial Crime arena. This week, I’ve been working on a Financial Crime Manager role. The hiring manager recognised the strength of the candidate I introduced and moved quickly. First and second-stage interviews were arranged within 48 hours. The best candidates are often speaking to multiple businesses at once. If a great candidate is right for your team, waiting a week to arrange a first interview can mean the difference between securing them and missing out. I like to think I ran with pace around the Weston Super 10K at the weekend! #FlairNewsHub

ā€œI’m ready for something that stretches me.ā€ That’s what a Senior Marketing Executive at a law firm said to me when we spoke on Monday. The next step isn’t always about a bigger title. It’s often about: šŸ‘‰ More ownership of projects and campaigns šŸ‘‰ Being involved from the initial idea right through to delivery šŸ‘‰ A balance of strategic input while still being hands-on šŸ‘‰ More exposure to senior stakeholders and different areas of the business šŸ‘‰ Joining a collaborative team where they can continue learning When you’re recruiting, sometimes the biggest selling point isn’t the job title. It’s being able to show someone why the role itself is genuinely a step forward. #FlairNewsHub #RealisingAmbtion #Marketing&BD

This week we’ve received more 5-star reviews for the team - something we always celebrate and love reading! ⭐ But why do our 5-star candidate reviews matter to our clients? Because a great candidate experience ultimately helps our clients land the best talent. In a competitive market, the 5-star experience matters. When we recruit for a client, we’re representing their brand too - so every interaction a candidate has with us should reflect positively on the business and the opportunity. So, while we love receiving 5-star reviews, they mean more than positive feedback. They show us that we’re giving candidates the experience that helps our clients attract, engage and ultimately secure great people! #FlairNewsHub

Last week I placed a resilient, talented Compliance Manager! Ā  I couldn't be happier for them. Ā  What makes it even more special is that this wasn't the first time we'd been through the process together. Ā  Two years ago, I put her forward to the same company. Ā  She interviewed well, the hiring manager really liked her, but ultimately, she just didn't have quite enough experience for the role. Ā  It would have been easy to let that knock her confidence. Ā  Instead, she asked herself what she needed to do to be successful next time. Ā  Over the following two years, she deliberately built that experience. Ā  She took on new responsibilities, broadened her technical knowledge and stayed focused on where she wanted her career to go. Ā  Last week, they interviewed with the same company, with the same hiring manager, for a Compliance Manager role. Ā  This time, they got the job. Ā  Moments like this are a great reminder that "no" doesn't always mean "never." Sometimes it simply means "not yet." Ā  They turned disappointment into motivation, invested in their own development and came back stronger #FlairNewsHub

It’s hard to believe that I’ve already been at Flair for almost 3 months, and I am pleased to say that I have officially passed my probation period! Ā  I’m also really excited to have a few more placements in the pipeline for next month. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the conversations and relationships I’ve been building begin to turn into successful outcomes. Ā  Starting a new career can feel daunting, but the support, encouragement and guidance I’ve received from everyone at Flair has made such a difference. Ā  We’re now looking for another ambitious person to join our team and develop a career within Legal and Financial Services recruitment. Ā  You don’t necessarily need previous recruitment experience. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been speaking to many compliance and risk professionals. Both candidates and those responsible for building compliance teams. A few things have really stood out. Financial Crime is definitely an area where I’m seeing movement. AML and sanctions experience continues to be highly sought after. Increasingly businesses seem to be looking for people who can do more than simply follow a process. They want people who can: šŸ”µ Advise šŸ”µ Interpret regulation šŸ”µ Challenge appropriately šŸ”µ Talk confidently to senior stakeholders šŸ”µ Understand how regulation actually impacts the wider business Hybrid working remains very important to candidates They know what flexibility they want, and in many cases they’re prepared to wait for the right opportunity rather than compromise. #FlairNewsHub

The very first person considered for a role is often the successful candidate. That's what happened with a recent Risk Manager placement. I spoke to the hiring manager at a wealth management firm, getting a good understanding of the role, the team and, importantly, the type of person they were looking for. Immediately, one particular candidate came to mind. Having recruited across Risk & Compliance for many years, I'm fortunate to have built strong relationships with some brilliant people in the market, and I knew this person could be an excellent fit. I organised an interview for them before I even sent the client their CV (client's trust coupled with my candidate network are key here) Further candidates were identified, presented and interviewed, but ultimately, the very first person I thought of during that initial conversation was the person they chose. For me, it's a great example of the value of really knowing your market and building genuine, long-term relationships with both candidates and clients. #FlairNewsHub

I've spoken to several marketing professionals this week, and one theme keeps coming up: feeling too siloed. When people talk about why someone leaves a role, the assumption is usually salary, title or progression. But also, people want to be closer to the business. They want more collaboration, a voice heard earlier, and a clear line of sight to the commercial impact of their work. The best marketing teams don't operate in isolation. They sit alongside business development, fee earners and leadership. Shaping direction, not just executing on it. So, for businesses hiring marketing talent, a few worth asking: Ā· Are we creating an environment where marketing can genuinely influence? Ā· Are our teams connected across the organisation? Ā· Do our marketers see the impact they're making? Attracting great people isn't just about the role. It's about the culture and visibility you build around it. #FlairNewsHub

Yesterday I spoke to a Compliance Director from an insurance firm who said... "The best compliance decisions are usually the ones nobody notices." I think they're spot on! Great compliance isn't about creating headlines or stepping in when something has already gone wrong. It's about spotting risks early, influencing decisions behind the scenes, and helping the business navigate complexity before it becomes a problem. The strongest Compliance professionals I meet rarely talk about "policing" the business, and they certainly don't have big egos. Instead, they talk about enabling growth, asking the right questions, and creating an environment where good decisions become the norm. Success in Compliance is often measured by what doesn't happen. #FlairNewsHub

A Morning of Great Compliance & Risk Conversations! Last Friday's Compliance & Risk Networking Breakfast was another excellent opportunity to step away from the day-to-day and discuss some of the biggest topics currently shaping the sector. The conversations were engaging and thought-provoking, with plenty of ideas and experiences shared around the table. A huge thank you to Emma Drew and the team at Stream for hosting us, and to Jonathan Haasz, ACII from Hadron Insurance for expertly chairing the discussions. A big shout out to Inga Dinham for working tirelessly behind the scenes! Finally, thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to a fabulous morning. What do you do when you're given time back? This was something that came up during our latest Marketing & BD Breakfast Networking event. AI is becoming increasingly prevalent in our working lives and let's face it, it's invaluable for those tasks that would usually be laborious and take up way too much time…which begged the question… What do we do with the time we get back?! From a recruitment perspective I'd say it gives me the ability to spend more time with people! Time to meet in person rather than on Teams, time to strengthen those relationships and make new ones! Time for conversations with both candidates and clients. AI won't be able to take that away from us! So - what do you do with your time? #FlairNewsHub #Marketing&BD #RealisingAmbitions

Yesterday, the Flair team had the pleasure of taking part in a training day delivered by Dave Lewis at The Recademy. šŸ‘ The session covered the importance of mindset, effective marketplace segmentation and building impactful recruitment sequences. Ā  Definitely plenty of practical ideas to take back to our day-to-day work! Ā  It was also great to see our Director Sarah Crawford reconnect with Dave, they worked together at the start of their recruitment careers. Ā  Also, a massive shoutout to Jackie Kerr Recruitment who joined us yesterday, it was so brilliant to have discussions with all of you and see some different perspectives in the world of recruitment. A huge thank you to Dave for sharing his expertise and delivering such an engaging, fun session. We are really looking forward to putting what we have learnt into practice! The Future Needs Compliance Skills & Experience! One of the conversations we had at our last compliance and risk networking breakfast was around AI If AI starts replacing many of the entry-level responsibilities in Compliance and Risk, how do we develop the next generation of Heads of Compliance, MLROs and Chief Risk Officers? All the senior compliance professionals around the breakfast table shaped their careers through experience, learning from others, making mistakes, asking questions and gradually developing the confidence to make difficult decisions. As AI becomes more capable, many technical tasks will become more efficient. But the qualities that define exceptional Compliance and Risk leaders can't simply be automated. šŸ”µ Judgement when there isn't a clear right answer. šŸ”µ Influencing senior stakeholders without relying on authority. šŸ”µ Building trusted relationships across the business. šŸ”µ Having the confidence to challenge decisions when it matters most. šŸ”µ Understanding the commercial context behind regulatory risk. šŸ”µ Leading teams through change and uncertainty. How do we ensure we're still creating the experiences that develop the leaders of tomorrow? #FlairNewsHub

We had another brilliant Marketing and BD Breakfast Networking event on Friday! Thanks to all those who could make it after a week of logistical and meteorological challenges!! We covered a couple of really interesting topics. Revisiting AI and its practical applications, as well as the pitfalls to avoid! The second topic was around the value of external training and conferences. There were some really interesting contributions, especially around the topic of "time gained back" from being fully integrated with AI - how do we use that time?! I think we all agreed that, AI aside, coming together face to face where you can share challenges and insights is so vital! Thanks to Sarah Crawford for facilitating with me and Inga Dinham for all your amazing organisation of this series of events! Looking forward to the next one! Most Compliance interviews test knowledge. The best ones test judgement. Anyone can learn a regulation. What you can't teach is how someone thinks under pressure, handles ambiguity, or pushes back when it matters. Here are five questions worth asking at your Compliance interview: Tell me about a time you had to deliver an uncomfortable message to a senior stakeholder. What happened? How do you decide what's a real risk and what's noise? Describe a situation where the rules didn't give you a clear answer. What did you do? What does good look like in a Compliance function and how far away was your last employer from it? If you joined us and spotted a problem in the first 90 days, what would you do? The answers won't just tell you if they can do the job. They'll tell you how they'll fit in your business, how they will react - what they would do. #FlairNewsHub

ā€œYou’ve made this very hard.ā€ That’s what my client said to me on Thursday last week. Not a complaint. A compliment. They interviewed two candidates. Both exceptional. Exactly what they needed. Both came directly from competitor firms. This is a client I’ve worked with for nearly 13 years. A Bristol-based investment firm that knows what great looks like and isn’t easy to impress. So when I was told they didn’t know who to choose I was happy! It doesn’t always go this way. Sometimes the shortlist is short! Sometimes the market just isn’t there. But when the brief is clear, the trust is established, and the search is done properly, this is what’s possible. #FlairNewsHub

On Friday, Harry Burrows and I went to meet a new client. It was a meeting full of energy right from the beginning. The Director spoke about his business with real passion and belief In what they are building. What stood out most was: They don’t want to be like their competitors. They want to be better in every possible detail. Every office across the UK is in a prime location. Every space is designed to a high standard. The interiors are impressive. The talent strategy is intentional. Even the hand soaps had been thought about. Some may see those things as small details. But candidates notice everything. They notice how a business makes them feel when they walk through the door. They notice energy. They notice pride. They notice whether people genuinely believe in the business they work for. And when candidates meet leaders who are enthusiastic, driven and completely invested in their workplace culture, interviews become exciting rather than transactional. I left that meeting feeling genuinely inspired myself. The best hiring journeys are rarely just about salary or job specs. They are about ambition. Standards. Energy. Belief. The businesses that consistently attract top talent are usually the ones obsessed with the finer details and fully committed to creating somewhere people genuinely want to be. #FlairNewsHub

I’ve been enjoying recruiting for a risk role! We've worked with one of the most respected legal firms for over 15 years. We are currently recruiting for a mid-level risk position with them. This process has reminded me exactly why I love what I do. The candidates have been exceptional. Technically sharp, experienced in risk with a passion to progress within risk. But what’s been fun has been hearing about them as people! One candidate is a published author. Another is a passionate historian in their spare time. Both are completely committed to their careers in risk, and both are exceptionally well-suited to this role. But they also walked in with rich, full lives – making it fun to interview them! I love looking beyond a CV #FlairNewsHub

"This role is office-based, non-negotiable." I hear this a lot, and I understand why businesses want people in the office. But in a market where the candidate pool is already limited, this can be the difference between a quick hire and a search that drags on for months. Hybrid working isn’t a perk anymore. The Office for National Statistics has reported that hybrid working is now an expectation across the UK workforce, which is reflected in conversations that I have with candidates every day. The insurers winning right now aren’t always paying the most; they’re the ones willing to have an open conversation about working arrangements. Are you curious about what candidates in your area are actually expecting? Drop me a message, and I’ll share what I’m hearing from candidates. #FlairforRecruitment #HybridWorking #FlairNewsHub

It’s not always the salary it’s the opportunity! I saw a brilliant example this week of a candidate I’ve been working with who wanted to move into a BD role at a law firm. It wasn’t a straightforward move. No direct legal sector experience and a drop in salary. However, the candidate was clear with what they wanted. šŸ”¹ Exposure to the legal sector šŸ”¹ A chance to build credibility in BD šŸ”¹ Long-term progression, not short-term gain Both the candidate and client knew there would be a learning curve – new partners, new expectations and ways of working. The candidate was willing to take the drop in salary because the firm was willing to invest in them. They saw the potential and the candidate knew there was a real opportunity to develop in the career they were focussing on. The best candidate isn’t always just looking at what you are offering today. It’s the bigger picture that matters! #FlairNewsHub

21 years and counting! I've reached the milestone of 21 years here at Flair! What a journey it's been. Technology has clearly changed - from a newspaper and a map! (just in case I didn't know where I was??!) To LinkedIn and AI! Some things have however stayed consistent: 😊 The support, of the fabulous team I work with every day! 😊 Shout out to Sarah Crawford Joanna Thomson and Harry Burrows for putting up with me for this long! 😊 The wonderful client relationships I've shared - some 21 years old - some brand new - Thank you! 21 years in, and I still genuinely love what I do. That doesn't happen without the right people around you. If our paths have crossed over these 21 years - thank you! And if we haven't met yet… well, there's plenty of time. 😊 #FlairNewsHub #RealisingAmbtions #FlairForRecruitment

She lit up talking about her new role. But there was one thing holding her back. I caught up with a past candidate last Friday. Senior manager. Brilliant. Exactly the kind of person you want walking through the door on day one. She was brought in to improve things. Fresh eyes. New thinking. A genuine sense of what good looks like. But the culture she’d landed in had a quiet resistance to change. ā€œIf it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.ā€ She wasn’t stuck. But she wasn’t fully unleashed either. And that got me thinking. If you hire someone for their vision - let them use it. New recruits see things long-timers can’t. They ask the questions nobody inside thinks to ask anymore. ā€œWe’ve always done it this wayā€ is not a strategy. It’s just habit dressed up as wisdom. The businesses I see getting the most from their senior hires are the ones that listen to them. Especially early on, when the observations are freshest. You hired them for a reason. Give them room to be that reason. #FlairNewsHub
